The presence of absence of a professional and clean website design is up to you, and those choices will effect who does business with you or opts in to your newsletter, etc. There are no hard and fast template designs to use, but rather your site just needs to be professional looking and fit in well with whatever market you are in. Don't feel so all alone if you have been banging your head against the wall. You need to have webpages that evoke positive feelings and perform better, and we will show you how to do that.
Even if you are not shooting for search engine rankings, it is a very good practice to assign relevant names to your webpage filenames. The reason for this is, when search engines go through your website they look at the file names and search for any keywords that they could rank your site for. Your main keyword phrase for that page will go in the filename extension. Totally ignore the use of the underscore here, but what you do want to use are hyphenated phrases. You want your filenames to be read correctly by the engines, and that is how you can do that. While not totally about web design, it will contribute some amount to usability perhaps.
If you have a header, and not all sites use one, but obviously you should include a home page link that is prominent.
We recommend using the link text, Home, so people know immediately the purpose. You want to give people the ability to quickly "go home" on each and every page. If you lack consistency with link placement, people probably will get the feeling the site is unprofessional. Just about always if you see a logo up top, and it is also a link - it is a way to click back to the main page.
Add a Favicon: Web design often comes down to paying attention to lots of details, and one of these you should add is what's known as a favicon. A favicon immediately gives your website a more professional look. It can be a real advantage to have a logo of your choosing appear with the URL so people can come to recognize it. Another advantage of favicons is that they appear when your pages are bookmarked by users, so this image can become widely known as your site gets more popular. Every little design element that you add to your website will in some way or the other contribute to the overall growth of your site, so make sure you're spending a good amount of time improving the web design of your site so that you're not only able to get new visitors, but also retain the old ones.
